There is so much more to a piece of jewelry than the final product. I always find myself wondering about the process of how it was made, where it came from, and the overall inspiration that sparked the creation of that specific piece. Maybe I'm just weird, but I like to think about these things. I like to think about the deeper meaning.
One of our favorite jewelry brands we carry here at the store is Ophelia Moon. All of the pieces are handmade by the owner, Noelle. She has the cutest, most unique designs and always incorporates the most beautiful gemstones into her pieces. I was lucky enough to ask her a few questions about her brand, so you guys don't have to sit and wonder about it like I do.
What inspired you to start making jewelry?
It all actually started by the loss of my cat Ophelia. When she was alive, I would have these visions of starting my own jewelry company after her, keep in mind I had no knowledge of making jewelry and I actually never even wore jewelry until I started making it. After she passed, it was unexpected and she was only 4 years old, I had a sink or swim moment. I recently came across this quote from Tennessee Williams that sums the experience up for me, "The world is violent and mercurial--it will have its way with you. We are saved only by love--love for each other and the love that we pour into the art we feel compelled to share: being a parent; being a writer; being a painter; being a friend. We live in a perpetually burning building, and what we must save from it, all the time, is love." So in the end love inspired to start creating!
Where do you get your ideas for your pieces and how do you decide what you want to create?
Street style! Art! Music! Lately I've been really inspired by the 70's and anything southwest. I could be laying in bed or driving in my car and I get this vision of how I want a piece to look and I get to work.
How did you come up with the name Ophelia Moon Jewelry?
All in all, the name did come from my cat Ophelia. I actually named her after one of Uranus's moons so that is why I kept it Ophelia Moon Jewelry.
How long did it take you to establish the jewelry line?
I initially started Ophelia Moon in March of 2015. I want to say it was the holiday season of that year. I live close to a very creative and artsy town, Asbury Park (it actually was just named one of the coolest small towns in America to live in). I remember I had my first show in Asbury and the community there is so supportive and welcoming that it gave me the confidence to stick with it.
Who do you envision wearing your work and how do you attract these types of people?
The ever-changing woman! Ha! My personal style is so ever-changing so I find my work constantly changing. All in all, I really try to offer a diverse range of products at affordable prices so anyone could wear it.
What materials do you prefer to use and why?
Am I allowed to say the pretty gemstones I get to stare at all day? Each stone is always so unique and special.
What are your plans for the coming future?
I'm very happy to say that I've begun making rings. I learn thru self-teaching so it has been a process! I do hope to incorporate metal work into my pieces and I've even been thinking about working on a men's jewelry line.
We are so excited to see her new creations and can’t wait to have them here in the store. As she said, her jewelry is made for the ever-changing woman and offers and diverse range of products, so don't be afraid to come check it out! I promise you will be glad you did.
